Awami League Activists Can Participate in Local Elections If Conditions Are Met

Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting, has stated that Awami League activists, whose organizational activities are currently suspended, will be able to participate in the upcoming local government elections if they adhere to certain conditions.

The advisor made this statement on Tuesday (June 9) in response to a question during a press conference held at the conference room of the Press Information Department (PID) at the Secretariat, where he was discussing the progress of various government activities.

The Prime Minister’s Information Advisor said, “There is absolutely no problem. This means, if an individual wishes to participate in the election, and if they are from the Awami League… because it is non-partisan, no one will speak on behalf of a party here. If a non-partisan individual comes forward but uses their campaign to promote the Awami League or their agendas, that would be an issue. Beyond that, if a non-partisan individual can fulfill the criteria (conditions) for contesting the election, they can certainly participate. Absolutely.”

When asked what would happen if someone participating in the election holds an Awami League party position, he responded, “Awami League party positions… what happens is, since the organization’s activities are suspended, they are not actually using that party position, nor can they. As an individual, anyone who can fulfill the established criteria, and wishes to run for election, can do so. The government has no reason to obstruct this.”
